About Varaždin

Varaždin is the city of baroque, music, flowers and bicycles. Since its inception in Middle Ages, Varazdin has always been a city loved and admired by its citizen


Monuments in Varaždin

The city is located in the North of Croatia on the southern bank of the river Drava. Varaždin has won  “Green flowers” award in year 2001.-2007., 2008,2009 and 2012  for the most decorated city of inland Croatia. It is rich with monumental and artistic heritage that is contained by its beautifully Historic Core. In the center of the Old Town You can find  palace, important public buildings and one of the oldest City Halls in Europe. Varaždin is also known as a city of bell towers which were built during the centuries

The most important historical building of Varaždin dating from ancient time is feudal fortress Old Town. The fort was built from 14th  to 19th century. Nearby, You can also visit the Municipal Museum that was opened in 1925. in the honor of the millennium anniversary of the Croatian kingdom.



The Parish Church of st. Nicholas (the patron of Varaždin) was built in 1761.  It has the unique Gothic tower and above is a remnant of the former church with interesting detail – stone teddy bears. The tower used to be surrounded with parapet for watchmen to guard the city against the fire.



Varaždin Cemetery was devised by a visionary soul called Herman Haller, who hasn’t only designed a resting place of the dead, but also an outstanding example of landscape architecture and natural monuments. It is an ideal, restful place for visitors due to botanic composition of birchs, flowers, grass and tall cypress trees. Varaždin cemetery was established in 1773, and in 1905, Herman Haller began to arrange it.  The cemetery is similar to the French fleeta and the most valuable monument is the “Angel of Death” , work of the sculptor Robert Frangeš Mihanović



While You are visiting Varaždin, make sure You take a day off to visit castle Trakošćan. It is protected as a historical entity, which consists of the castle, the building next to the castle, park and forest park with a lake.  Trakošćan was built in the late 13th century in northwestern Croatian defense system as a small observation fortress for monitoring the road from Ptuj to Bednja valley. In 1954 museum was established inside of the castle with a permanent exhibitions. Today, the castle is owned by the Republic of Croatia.


Festivals, events, restaurants and accommodation

During the year many events are organized in Varaždin.
First event is a “New year” race. The first one was organized in 1977 and only two cities in the world enter the New Year by running – Sao Paolo and Varaždin.
Youngest of the events is “Varaždin under the stars” , a festival of dance, astronomy and gastronomy.

During the Autumn for the last 40 years, in Varaždin are held the baroque evenings, accompanied with concerts and performances. The most popular festival is Špancirfest. During the festival, city becomes the kingdom of music, theater and art created by the magical hands of the artists. Every year, festival brings a new attraction, with the intention that every visitor becomes an active participant and co-creator. The only condition to participate is to smile and bring good feelings/emotions.


When it comes to gastronomy, Varaždin is well known by restaurants and bars which offer the original Croatian dishes like “Zagorske štrukle”. For accommodation, You can find hotels and private apartments.
